Stump Grinding · Michigan · Serving Oakland, Macomb & Genesee Counties

Stump gone. Lawn back. Often the same week.

Below-grade stump grinding lets you reseed grass, repour concrete, or replant a new tree without waiting six months for the old stump to rot. We grind, haul the chips, and leave the spot ready for whatever's next.

Why Grind the Stump

The removal isn't done until the stump is gone.

A tree gets taken down and the stump stays in the yard. It's a tripping hazard, a mower-blade killer, and a slow-rotting eyesore that invites carpenter ants and fungus for the next ten years. Plus you can't reseed, repour, or replant anything on top of it.

We grind stumps below grade — usually four to six inches under, deeper if you're laying concrete or planting a replacement tree. The chips get hauled, the hole gets ready for soil, and the lawn looks like the tree was never there.

Same-day grinding is common if your tree was removed by another crew. We bring the grinder, the trailer, and the cleanup.

How Deep, How Wide

Grinding depth depends on what you're putting back.

The right depth matters. Too shallow and you can't replant. Too deep and you're paying for grinding you don't need.

For lawn

4–6 inches below grade

Enough to seed grass over and mow without hitting a thing. The most common job for homeowners.

For new tree

12–18 inches below grade

Replanting needs depth so the new tree's roots have clean soil, not a decaying root ball.

For concrete

12+ inches + base prep

Driveway, patio, or footer pours need extra depth + clean base to prevent settling.

Big surface roots running across the lawn? We can grind those down too — separate scope.

What's Included

Grinding, hauling, and a yard you can walk on.

Most stump grinding companies grind the stump and leave a mound of chips where the stump used to be. We don't. The chips get hauled or backfilled into the hole (your call), and the spot is left tidy.

  • Stump ground below grade to your chosen depth (4″ standard, deeper on request)
  • Chip handling — haul off-site, backfill the hole, or pile for mulch — your choice
  • Topsoil-ready spot for reseeding, repouring, or replanting
  • Lateral root grinding available as add-on for visible surface roots
  • Property-friendly access — turf protection mats, tight-lot equipment
  • Same-day work if you scheduled it with a removal we did, or as a standalone job

What It Costs

Stump grinding is priced by diameter. Free estimate, no surprises.

Pricing depends on the stump's diameter (measured at ground level), its location, and what you want done with the chips. A single ornamental stump in an open yard is a different job than four large hardwood stumps on a tight lot.

We'll come out, measure the diameter, walk the access, and give you a written estimate within 24 hours. Grinding usually happens within the week of the estimate. If you have multiple stumps, the per-stump cost drops.

Already had the tree removed? Call — we can often grind the next day.
